How to Install LED Light Strip For Your Smart Home Set Up?

Why are LED Light Strips So Popular?

LED light strips are a great way to add some mood lighting to your home. LED light strips have become a household staple in the last few years because of their versatility and energy efficiency. They are used for many different purposes, including decorating your home or office space, illuminating under cabinets and other hard-to-access places, and adding an exciting accent color to bedrooms.

Things You Should Know Before Installing the LED Strip

It can be hard to know where you should start when installing LED light strips. Read our breakdown below before fitting your home with LED strips for the best results.

LED Strip Density = Brightness

The density of an LED light strip means how many LEDs are in a set area. For example, the Standard Density has 30 bulbs per meter, whereas the High-Density contains 60 emitters and is brighter with similar power consumption rates (30W vs. 25). A higher number equates to better quality illumination for your home.

There are many different types of LED strip lights on the market, but Lumen output will be important in determining what kind you choose. A Lumen is the measurement of brightness perceived by the human eye. Most of us tend to use watts (think incandescent lighting) to measure the brightness of a light. However, LEDs use Lumens to determine the output of light you will receive.

The recommended amount of Lumens for common uses of LED light strips are as follows:

  • Accent or Mood Lighting – 100-300 Lumens/ft.
  • Under Cabinet Lighting – 175-360 Lumens/ft.
  • Task lighting w/ higher distance from source – 300-450 Lumens/ft.
  • Bedroom, Cove Lighting – 180-500 Lumens/ft.

How to Install LED Strip Lights?

LED strip lights offer a variety of color options and can be installed in various places. The first step is to wire them according to the manufacturer's instructions, which vary by model. Many sizes are available from different brands, and they all operate differently from traditional light bulbs or fixtures.

Most LEDs also come with their mounting systems for easy installation on ceilings tiles, among other surfaces like walls/ceiling plastered surfaces etc. However, these may need additional materials if you want something more permanent such as screws and brackets.

Step 1: Make Sure the Surface is Clean & Dry

Before adhering your strip lights, clean the surface of your area. This will keep it mounted for longer and ensure it's strong enough to handle the weight of the strip without falling off.

Step 2: Unroll the LED Strip, Stick to Right Location

The LED strip lights come rolled on a spool. Unroll the length of lighting you will be working with, remove any adhesive backing and stick to your desired surface! Press down each part so it's firmly attached but has no air bubbles as well for best results.

If you want to make sure your strip light stays in place, use fixing clips. Peel off the adhesive tape and apply it with pressure over no sticky area on their surface; this will help strengthen them even further! Secure these clips by screwing them if desired for extra security.

Step 3: Connect LED Light Strip to the Controller

Once your strip lights are securely attached, plug them into an outlet and power source. Then attach it to the controller already in place before connecting all wires up together on each end of the strip.
